Group therapy typically involves a therapist providing psychotherapy and skill-building for individuals who share similar conditions or experiences. It can reduce feelings of isolation and provide additional support. Some people prefer a combination of group and individual therapies.
Here at Harmonia Wellness we offer 3 types of groups, CBGT, GEMDR, and psycho-education.
CBGT is a group approach that makes use of cognitive, behavioral, and relational aspects to enhance the coping skills of the participants, and enhance relational and intrapersonal problems that clients may be experiencing. Coping skills are techniques you can use to help you handle difficult emotions, decrease stress, and establish or maintain a sense of internal order.
GEMDR is a group version of EMDR. In GEMDR, the therapist provides their technical EMDR skills to aid the client’s process. The therapist also offers emotional support and containment and helps maintain appropriate emotional regulation. The structured eight-phase approach and three-pronged protocol provides parameters for therapists to organize treatment strategies. Once the group targets are set, and clients recognize possibilities of improvement, participation in the group can be a powerful tool of change.
Psycho-education is a form of group therapy that educates clients about their disorders and ways of coping. The group has the opportunity to ask questions about the topic as it relates to them. It is not required for group members to share their personal stories.
Groups can run on either an opened or closed schedule. Open groups continuously run, allowing new members to join weekly. Closed groups run the entirety of the group length with the same members. New members can not join until the group starts over.
We offer 3 regular groups and 1 group by request. All sessions meet once a week.
If you are interested in joining a group and are not a client, please contact us to set up an intake appointment.
This group follows a trauma psycho-education model, it is an information-based group. The goal is to inform clients about the cognitive, physical, emotional, spiritual, and social effects of unprocessed trauma. It will also serve as a forum to learn new coping techniques, which can help reduce unwanted symptoms of trauma. Research shows that psycho-education alone can increase quality of life after trauma.
Do you feel like something is “wrong with you” or that you “need to be fixed?” If you are a survivor of trauma and you are not sure how it affects you, this group may be beneficial for you. Through this group you will be able to recognize that you are not broken, rather you are experiencing a predictable set of symptoms, a normal response to an abnormal situation. These symptoms can be difficult to live with, but they evolved to assist human survival and are easier to manage when understood in this light.
Please note that this group is solely educational, due to this there is no obligation to share your trauma with the group.
This group cycle is 14 weeks and is a closed group.
Group time and location: TBD
If you become easily frustrated, overreact or avoid, ”see red,” or even feel like anger is the only way to solve problems, you may consider joining our 13 week anger management group. During each group we discuss topics such as: the difference between anger and aggression, the anger cycle, coping skills, communication styles, and other important topics related to anger. Participants will receive weekly handouts that include a summary of core concepts, worksheets for completing between-session challenges, and space to take notes for each of the sessions.
This is a closed group. Participants will receive a certificate of completion after completing all 13 sessions.
Group time and location: TBD
If you struggle in relationships and seem to always end up with someone who is toxic and you can't break this pattern, this group may be for you.
Many individuals who struggle with relationships do so because of past attachment wounds, typically from childhood. These can include an early separation from parents, lengthy hospitalizations, incidents of trauma, instances of neglect, or an otherwise troubled childhood. These issues typically effect a child's ability to form healthy, secure attachments later in life.
This group utilizes both EMDR and Ego-States Therapy techniques to help process previous attachment traumas. This is a closed group and is a minimum of 10 weeks with extension upon group consensus.
Group time and location: TBD
Specialized groups geared towards processing specific traumas, ie. combat, sexual assault, first responders, etc. These groups are done by request with enough interest. Group sizes are between 4 - 6 clients.
This is a closed group and the length is a minimum of 8 weeks.
Group time and location: varies upon request
